On Saturday 24th January, we sent two teams to the first round of the FA People’s Cup. One team consisted of five incredible mum’s that were looking to prove a point; it’s never too late to be a role model. The group of mum’s started playing Football together in September when their daughters joined our girls’ only Football session’s. Over the months they have developed friendships, Football skills and the desire to inspire their daughters to continue playing Football.

On the other side of the spectrum, our other She Can Play team are all too familiar with the FA People’s cup having beat 5000 teams to become  2016 Runners Up of the Adult Female Category. Both teams with a point to prove, for different reasons.

Our Mum’s squad kicked off the tournament in Shepherds Bush with an incredible 3-2 win against a very competitive team, such a fantastic achievement for a group of women that have never played in a team before! It didn’t stop there, our mum’s placed 3rd overall in their group that comprised of 6 strong female teams. Well done mum’s!!! Picture2

Our women’s squad also kicked off the People’s Cup in true She Can Play style beating the first team 8-0. The girls confidence remained high even though suffering a shock defeat in their second game, they managed to get through the group stages finishing in 2nd place. The quarter finals brought about some familiar faces that posed a great challenge in last years Cup; Fusion. She Can Play after a tough fought game managed to win by a single goal, much to the delight of their home supporters. After breezing through the semi-finals with a  7-2 win they were happy to know the two finalists automatically qualify for the REGIONALS.

After walking through the imaginary tunnel to lucky number pitch 3 the girls soaked up the euphoric atmosphere of 30+ fans and a dog. After singing the national anthem She Can Play were ready to play. After coming back from 2-0 down to levelling 2-2 it was looking to be decided by pens. However a last minute goal by the opposition piped them to the post. The loss didn’t last long as soon after the officials notified She Can Play that the opposition had fielded an illegal player, thus meaning She Can Play were crowned winners of the local round!
